This presentation will discuss the basics of heat gain and loss, thermal bridging, and condensation. using these concepts, Trimble will examine the various methods for boosting energy efficiency in brick walls with an eye to different types of insulation, air barriers, passive solar, and thermal mass. Trimble will close with a review of the building codes, building standards, and energy modeling.


  1. Calculate R-values of various wall assemblies and understand that R-value alone is not enough of a predictor.
  2. Assess the impacts of thermal mass on exterior walls.
  3. Use energy efficient strategies in their next project.
  4. Learn about condensation and will be able to apply strategies learned earlier to avoid condensation in walls.
