Roofs are the exposed to intense solar radiation throughout the day which in-turn increases the cooling load of the building and consequently the energy consumption. Cool roofs work on the principle of reflecting solar radiation, hence minimizing heat transfer to the interior of the building. through the roof. This is a simple and effective strategy to reduce cooling energy consumption. Cool roofs are also known for their benefit towards mitigating urban heat island effect.

This is Part 2 of the course series which covers how a cool roof works and its benefits. Part 1 of the course covered the fundamental technical ground on how a cool roof works.

This course is designed in short modules. You will learn the working principle of a cool roof, its benefit to the building and surroundings, material options and installation. Cool roof requirement in LEED version 4 is mentioned briefly in the context of material property. The last module will discuss alternatives that can reduce heat ingress thereby keeping the building interiors cool.
