Going Green in Apache Junction: Apache Junction City Hall's LEED Certification, 10 Years Later

The City of Apache Junction was the first municipal government to create a City Hall complex that is the LEED-certified Apache Junction City Hall today. The City hall complex includes new buildings for Administration, Municial Court, and Human Resources consisting of three separate buildings. Additionally, the City's Multi-Generational Center was also built to LEED standards. Learn how the city decided to go green and now that the buildings are comfortably "broken in," learn how the city's buildings are performing and take away some lessons learned.

The Apache Junction City hall complex is situated at the north east corner of Superstition Boulevard and Idaho Road. The property was purchased from the Arizona State Land Department and comprises 13 acres. This land houses current municipal uses and also allows for expansion in the future. The development of the site not only consisted of new LEED buildings, but also focused on the preservation of the site's native setting. With over a decade in operation, the Apache Junction City Hall is one of the state’s earliest LEED facilities. The city will discuss lessons learned during the design and construction process, but more importantly talk about the benefits of working in a LEED certified building. With any building, there are issues to be worked out over a 10 year period but the city has, overall, experienced a great benefit from its choice to construct a LEED certified building.


  1. Attendees will gain knowledge of the policy and political aspects of a local unit of a government's decision making process in choosing to develop in a more sustainable way. Cities can take the lead by moving the needle toward sustainable building practices and serve as an example for local developers and contractors
  2. Attendees will learn about the process to acquire state land, the site planning process to place several municipal buildings in a native environment while preserving native terrain, washes and native plant material
  3. Attendees will be able to learn from the city and apply the city's experience to their situation. With over 10 years of use and occupancy of the city's municipal administration center, the city has learned a great deal about the operational performance of the buildings
  4. Attendees will be able to compare and exchange their own experiences with that of city officials, as the city moves into the second decade of managing its LEED certified buildings.
