This session is designed to educate the engineering and consulting communities on the requirements to earn points toward LEED certification by conserving water used in cooling towers and evaporative condensers. Central to this requirement is increasing the cycles of concentration.

About

The session will review the meaning of and parameters for measuring cycles of concentration. The steps for calculating cycles of concentration as well as an actual case study will also be discussed. A tour of the EVAPCO manufacturing facility will follow the discussion on the Cooling Tower Water Use credit. The tour will exhibit the manufacturing processes and assembly of cooling towers, evaporative coolers and condensers, as well as water treatment products. The tour will highlight EVAPCO’s Water Analytics Lab where water samples are tested for those parameters germane to calculating cycles of concentration.

Objectives

  1. Describe the intent and requirements for the LEED v4 BD+C Cooling tower water use credit.
  2. Identify the control parameters applicable to the LEED v4 BD+C Cooling tower water use credit.
  3. Define cycles of concentration and calculate for each controll parameter, as well as max cycles of concentration for the cooling tower.
  4. Distinguish between the requirements for earning 1 or 2 points for the LEED v4 BD+C Cooling tower water use credit.
