USGBC Detroit Lunch & Learn Series - Why Bother Commissioning?

GBCI: 0920015429

Everyone knows what commissioning (Cx) is and when you specify it you know exactly what will be done, right? So, then why is there sometimes a 3:1, 5:1 or greater price spread for Cx services on bid day? Perhaps the scope requirements aren't quite so clear to the bidders! Jim Dirkes from Building Performance Team and John Jeffries from FISECx will share their experience with us and help us decipher the world of commissioning.

Why Bother Commissioning?

Everyone knows what commissioning (Cx) is and when you specify it you know exactly what will be done, right? So, then why is there sometimes a 3:1, 5:1 or greater price spread for Cx services on bid day? Perhaps the scope requirements aren't quite so clear to the bidders! Jim Dirkes from Building Performance Team and John Jeffries from FISECx will share their experience with us and help us decipher the world of commissioning. Their insight will help us understand the following:

- How to align expectations with needed scope
- What ASHRAE says (and doesn't say) in its two Cx Guidelines
- How these apply to various projects types and levels of complexity
- Why Cx routinely provides payback for designers and owners in less than 24 months

This presentation will allow you to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of when, where and why commissioning is applicable to your projects.

Jim Dirkes is the founding member of The Building Performance Team and loves to provide greater understanding to commercial building owners and designers about how their building’s performance affects their company’s overall success. He has been involved in the design, commissioning, analysis and modeling of HVAC systems since 1975, believes that high performing buildings allow people to enjoy greater quality of life than they might otherwise have, and is proud to help his clients reduce overhead and improve competitiveness.

John Jeffries is the founding member of FISECx LLC and is focused on serving the Federal and Public sector markets. As a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), FISECx is involved in projects ranging from medical center renovations at FE Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming to the Biological Science Building at the University of Michigan. Portage Public Schools and Troy Public Schools round out some of the current projects the firm is engaged in.

Objectives

  1. Gain improved awareness of a common construction process (commissioning) which aids high performance design
  2. Understand how this process varies in current practice
  3. Gain greater appreciation of the roles played by design, construction and Cx team members
  4. Understand benefits to the designer and construction team
