Vegetated roofs serve many environmental and aesthetic purposes in building. Green Roofs help save water, reduce the heat island effect, restore habitat and increase the human desire to enjoy outdoor space. During the program, attendees will learn about the industry, design criteria, what products are available, how to maintain green roofs, and how they perform in the northern climate. We will go over some examples, including hospitals and pollinator friendly buildings
Green (vegetated) roofs touch 6 categories and many points within LEED v4.

Objectives

  1. Explain how water is used and saved on vegetated roofs in the LEED v4 BD+C and O+M rating system. (LEED Credits: Integrative Process, Water Related Systems; Rain Management)
  2. Describe how restoring habitat in the built environment can not only improve ecosystems, but also increase the human desire to enjoy outdoor rooftop space in the LEED v4 BD+C and O+M rating system. (LEED Credits: Site Development- Protect or Restore Habitat; Open Space; Heat Island Reduction)
  3. Understand how to monitor the performance of vegetated roofs in the region to achieve the LEED Credit of Innovation in the LEED v4 BD+C and O+M rating system. (LEED Credit: Innovation)
