Tour the "greenest little building in Portsmouth."

The Fred W. Beazley River Academy, with a modest footprint, models green building practices while offering an enclosed classroom and workspaces for their education team. The building’s mission: To teach all ages the wonders of restoring an urban river to environmental health.

Twenty solar panels, a giant rain cistern and passive solar heating and cooling are among green building features at the new building at Paradise Creek Nature Park, a 40-acre partnership between the Elizabeth River Project and the City of Portsmouth.

“The River Academy exponentially expands the ways we can use this urban park to create a place of peace, where young people in particular can step away from inner-city challenges to dream a different future,” said Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, Executive Director of the Elizabeth River Project.
