The Materials and Resources credits in LEED v4 introduce new ways of assessing product selection for designers, builders, owners and operators who are seeking to achieve them. While working with these credits may be new to many project teams, the manufacturing industry has been getting ready to have products and information available to end users to make these credits achievable.

This panel, representing three major product manufacturers and USGBC’s Technical Solutions team will explore how materials are addressed in LEED v4 by building upon your knowledge previous versions of LEED. The “Building product disclosure & optimization” credits in LEED v4 go beyond previous versions with the goal of transforming the materials supply chain. Credits for environmental product declarations, sourcing of raw materials and materials ingredients encourage the use of products and materials for which life cycle information is available and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life cycle impacts.

Our panelists:

  • Stefanie Young, LEED AP BD+C, VP, Technical Solutions, U.S. Green Building Council
  • Amy Hockett AIA, CDT, LEED Green Associate, National Marketing Manager - Architectural Services & Sustainability, National Gypsum
  • Keith Lindemulder, Environmental Business Development, Nucor Corporation
  • Philip Ivey, Strategic Sustainability Leader, Milliken

Learning objectives:

  • Explain the intent and ways to implement the three Materials & Resources credits in LEED BD+C/ID+C v4 for Building product disclosure and optimization in order to provide valuable feedback in LEED v4.1 public comment.
  • Read environmental product declarations in order to identify desired product attributes when attempting the LEED v4 BD+C/ID+C credit for Building product disclosure and optimization - environmental product declarations.
  • Explain how the LEED v4 BD+C/ID+C credit for Building product disclosure and optimization - sourcing of raw materials, is similar and how it differs from LEED 2009 Materials & Resources credits, in order to optimize points on LEED projects attempting this credit.
  • Describe options for material ingredient reporting for Option 1 of LEED v4 BD+C/ID+C credit for Building product disclosure and optimization - material ingredients.
