David Troust, VP of Mid- Atlantic Services & Principal with Great Forest Inc., will discuss best practices in sustainable waste management and sustainable purchasing.

Attendees will learn how to establish and maintain a high-performing waste management program and sustainable purchasing policy, which includes proper identification of materials, proper preparation and separation of recyclables, accurate waste diversion rate calculations, and conducting waste stream audits.

Also discussed will be the Chinese “Green Fence” and how the recent changes to China’s commodity's market regulations have affected the U.S. recycling industry. David will be utilizing the knowledge and experience he has gained over the past eight years developing and managing commercial, residential and retail recycling programs in the region.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how waste stream audits are performed and why GBCI accepts Enevo sensor data in lieu of a waste stream audit in the Ongoing Purchasing and Waste Policy prerequisite of the LEED v4 O+M rating system.
  2. Understand how to calculate accurate diversion rate metrics, and how Enevo sensor data is factored into the calculation in the Solid waste management-ongoing credit of the LEED v4 O+M rating system.
  3. Explain what type of changes in procurement habits are necessary according to the Purchasing-ongoing credit of the LEED v4 O+M rating system.
  4. Identify which materials actually are and are not recyclable, and how to prepare recyclables using proper disposal methods.
