Take a tour of the Kaiser Permanente North Arundel Medical Center with USGBC Maryland!

The North Arundel Medical Center is the first LEED Gold certified facility in Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic region. Sustainable features include Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) mechanical systems, 100 percent LED lighting, instantaneous water heaters, occupancy sensors, full energy monitoring reported to Kaiser Permanente’s regional offices, a more efficient building envelope than the 2015 energy code required, an active design strategy and use of environmentally preferred materials.

This project tour, led by project team members from Gresham, Smith and Partners, will highlight the sustainable features of this healthcare facility and talk about the strategies used to achieve LEED certification.

GBCI CE pre-approval is pending.

Learning Objectives

  1. Articulate the value of sustainable design to health care clients
  2. Make connections between sustainable design practices and human health including how the project achieved an Innovation and Design credit for Active Design under the LEED NC V3 rating system.
  3. Understand the importance of lifecycle analysis in decision making including how decisions were made to design systems that reduce energy consumption and helped the project achieve 14 of the 19 points in the Optimize Energy Performance credit (EAc1) under the LEED NC v3 rating system.
  4. Overcome site challenges to accomplish environmental goals including achieving SSc5.1 Site Development – Protect or Restore Habitat under the LEED NC V3 rating system. SSc5.1 is also a regional priority credit in the project zip code.
