Please join the Northern Gulf Coast of USGBC Florida for a lunch presentation on military solar generation.

The presentation will explore the solar installation sites on military bases throughout Gulf Power's service territory and look briefly at the Perdido Landfill Gas project.

Learning objectives

  1. Learn the important components of determination and design for site preparation.
  2. Learn the complexities of designing and building large-scale solar generation projects.
  3. Learn to identify the various components necessary and how they connect to generate power from the sun.
  4. Learn how to deliver the power generated to the electrical grid.


Melvin A. Young, Generation Asset Manager - Resource Planning

Mel Young began his career working for Alabama Power Company in 1981 as a Co-op student at Plant Gorgas, while attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and went back to work in Power Generation for Alabama Power. Mel transferred to Gulf Power Company, Power Generation where he has been since 1997. Mel's primary focus throughout his career has been plant performance and reliability; most recently, since 2014, he has been in renewable energy product development.
