Taking Down Walls: Teaming-up to Build and Teach in an Outdoor Classroom

Outdoor classrooms and hands-on learning are proving to be an excellent for accelerating student comprehension and improving student well-being. Learn how one school-based team went from an overwhelming task list and funding gap, to connecting with the right community partners to phase and budget their build-out. We will examine challenges and benefits of building an on-site outdoor classroom using an example: Washburn Elementary School.

Each presenter will explain their role in the project and how someone in a similar role in a different school or community could achieve a similar goal. Together we will discuss ways to build a supportive, engaged team, how to build a case for district and school staff buy-in, how to manage timelines, prepare for setbacks, and take advantage of opportunities. The team will cover discovered best practices both throughout the project and in hindsight. Washburn took the vision, passion and struggles of a few key teachers/staff who had been working on moving the project forward for a couple years and with the help of community turned a 5-year build out, $140K budget into a functioning, beautiful classroom built out in a few short months for under $6K and is now working to ensure on-going use and maintenance of the classroom through training and activities.

This program qualifies for 1 GBCI CE and 1 AIA LU/HSW CE.
