Inquiry

The project targeting LEED-CS certification ("LEED site") is classified as LZ3 - Medium (Commercial/Industrial). The lighting has been designed to meet the interior lighting requirements for this credit. The building is located between two other existing properties that have not targeted LEED certification ("non-LEED sites"), and all three are joined by a parking lot area that is continuous along the front and rear of all three buildings, with continuous parking lot also present through the alleyways (drive aisle and parking) between the buildings. Both the LEED and non-LEED sites meet the light cutoff credit requirements for LZ3 zoning. The horizontal footcandle trespass requirements are met along the front and back of the LEED site, which border a road and drainage channel, respectively. The lighting power densities for the site do not exceed 80% of the lighting densities as defined in ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2004. The sides of the site, which border the parking lot of adjacent buildings, do not meet the horizontal footcandle trespass requirements. We feel that the credit intent is met while allowing light to trespass onto the adjacent parking lots. Because safety requirements dictate the amount of light required for the non-LEED sites, allowing light spillage onto the parking lot reduces the overall number of lights required. For example, if the light from the LEED parking lot does not spill onto the non-LEED parking lot, additional lights will be required to light the dark boundary on the non-LEED side. As this is a continuous parking lot, it does not provide habitat for species that would otherwise be disrupted by the light. In addition, the 90
