Inquiry
Does the generation of biohazardous waste by building occupants preclude a project from being eligible for LEED Certification? The stated intent of the prerequisite is to "Facilitate the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in landfills." Biohazardous waste generated by occupants in the proposed facility will not be hauled to and disposed of in landfills. Such waste will be temporarily held in an easily accessible area that serves the entire building and is separate from other waste holding areas. An independent service provider will periodically remove the waste from that location and will destroy it in a manner consistent with federal regulation. All other waste (at minimum: paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastics and metals) not designated as biohazardous will be handled in a manner consistent with the intent and the requirements of the prerequisite.
