As the creator of the high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryer category, Excel Dryer has a reputation of providing the most innovative hand dryer solutions that save time, money and the environment. Its East Longmeadow, Mass., headquarters, which implements a green cleaning and recycling program, includes LEED Gold office space. All types of commercial facilities have adopted high-speed, energy-efficient hand dryer technology — from large venues such as stadiums, arenas and convention centers, to mom-and-pop stores, hotels and restaurants, and many government buildings. With default lavatory use, the average large office uses 20,000 paper towels a day, the equivalent of more than 5.2 million paper towels consumed in a year. Excel understands that the full extent of the environmental impact of paper towels, which begins with production and continues long after use. Excel’s new, expanded and enhanced product line enables building owners and managers to design the very best hand drying solution for any restroom environment. By making some of the most popular features standard, Excel continues to enhance the user experience and provide smarter products that are easier to maintain. Key product features of the XLERATOR® Hand Dryer include: A 95% cost savings vs. paper towels, using 80% less energy than conventional hand dryers. Excel was the first hand dryer company to commission an independent Life Cycle Assessment (peer reviewed to ISO 14040 standards) that confirmed the XLERATOR Hand Dryer reduces the carbon footprint of hand drying up to 75 percent versus even 100 percent recycled paper towels. Excel also chaired the first committee to establish global Product Category Rules (PCR) for the hand dryer industry. The main purpose for creating the PCR was to establish industry-consensus parameters for testing a product’s performance and environmental impacts. This represented the first industry consensus standard for hand dryers. Leading by example, Excel invested in third-party testing to evaluate their XLERATOR®, XLERATOReco® and ThinAir® Hand Dryers to the newly established methods outlined in the PCR, making them the first-published in the industry. The result of Excel’s efforts set a precedent. Using these guidelines, Excel’s signature products were the first to receive Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), offering transparent product information and serving as an example for other product manufacturers. Through Excel’s efforts, specifiers and buyers can now make more informed decisions. Excel always attempts to engage in a dialogue with customers, sharing credible, third-party testing results to substantiate environmental claims. With so much information being disseminated in the market, it is becoming increasingly important to communicate environmental impact claims not only through corporate communications but also through alliances with and certifications from organizations like the USGBC.
