Fiona Cousins graduated from the University of Cambridge with degrees in Engineering Science and Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment. After graduating, she joined Arup’s London office. Over the years, she has worked at Arup in a variety of roles and is currently a Principal with the New York office. She also served for two years as the chair of the New York Chapter of the USGBC, during which time membership tripled and the staff grew from 1 person to 8 people. Fiona has a strong interest in the energy use and the thermal performance of buildings. This enthusiasm for low energy design and technical performance has driven her work throughout her career, starting with the specialist analysis of thermal behavior. In turn, her enthusiasm has led to a passion for fully integrated design solutions, where each discipline plays a part in developing the project. She has had the opportunity to apply this approach in her recent work, which includes a number of complex laboratory and gallery projects for which she lead as project director. The parallel threads of integrated design and high performance buildings have inspired a practice that specializes in translating ideas of sustainable development into practical programs of action.
