Richard Fochtman

Rick is the Director of Project Development and Sustainability for Bernards, a leading building and construction management firm. He is based in the Inland Empire Office and has over 16 years of local construction experience. In his current position Rick is responsible for business development and pre-construction management for the region.

A LEED Accredited Professional since 2004, Rick holds a specialty in Building Design & Construction BD+C. As the firm’s Director of Sustainability, he oversees all of Bernards’ green building efforts. He works with our project teams to develop LEED compliance strategies and directs our employee training efforts. He provides design review and consultation to designers and clients during the preconstruction phase of the project and, with support from our estimating department, provides comparative cost data and lifecycle cost analyses. Rick has developed streamlined tracking and documentation methods and cost saving commissioning strategies that have improved the ‘LEED experience’ for our staff and our clients.

Rick is also active in promoting the advantages of sustainable develop to the professional development community and public agencies. He is a founding board member of the United States Green Build Council, Inland Empire Chapter and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. He has held numerous leadership positions with the Chapter, including Chair for 2 years, and will be heading up education in 2013. Rick is working with several organizations such as the American Institute of Architects, Chaffey and San Bernardino Community Colleges and UC Riverside Extension to bring awareness to green building and to develop education and certification programs. He also served as the LEED Consultant for Habitat for Humanity’s first LEED Certified home in the City of Riverside, which has received a Platinum Rating.

Rick is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara where he holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Studies / Geographical Planning. He completed his thesis work on sustainable residential design.
