Sonrisa is the Sustainability Strategist in the Office of Sustainability
within the Office of Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. She works to establish
sustainability as a core business value for the City and engage community
partners to instill it as a public value. This involves working with others
in the city on transforming the typical ways in which projects and processes
in the city are analyzed, valuated, and funded. It also involves partnering
with leaders in the community to achieve each of the city’s 2020
Sustainability Goals. Sonrisa has led a public engagement process which
included a series of roundtables and breakout sessions in advance of and
during the 2015 and 2016 Sustainable Denver Summits in efforts to garner
commitments and develop action teams to achieve the goals.
A Sustainability Engineer with ten years of experience, she brings with her a
deep knowledge of energy resources and all facets of sustainable buildings
and their impact on the natural and built environment. She has leveraged this
experience in her work in the City on the Building Code Review Committee that
updated the city building codes to the 2015 version, which included requiring
new single-family homes and duplexes to be electric vehicle charging ready;
supported Energize Denver, an effort to improve the energy efficiency of the
city’s existing buildings through benchmarking and transparency; participated in the state’s development of the Commercial PACE guidelines that will allow for financing of energy efficiency and renewable energy through a special assessment on a property; and is
currently participating in the city’s efforts exploring upgrading its streetlights to LEDs.
Sonrisa is also the Owner of Sustainnovations, LLC, a sustainability
