June 20, 2017 Auburn Avenue Research Library, (AARL) was awarded U.S.G.B.C's prestigious LEED Gold Certification. 2M Design Consultants, Inc. (2M), provided LEED program-wide oversight for Fulton County Government under the HEERY/RUSSELL PMT, J.W. Robinson & The Freelon Group provided the architectural and design services; Epsten Group, Inc. provided LEED Administration services, and; CM@Risk services was provided by Cooper-Sovereign Construction.

Located in the Sweet Auburn historic district, the birth home of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, AARL spans four stories and covers 49,442 square feet of space. Originally opened in May 1994, it is the first library in the southeast, and the nation's second largest archive specializing in the culture and history of people of African descent. The AARL is dedicated to preserving African American heritage by providing a home to the manuscripts, photographs, oral histories, books, periodicals and works of art that contain the history of peoples, nations, beliefs and dreams, of a past worth sharing with the future.

The grand reopening for AARL took place on August 4, 2016 and is strategically connected to its community with access to public transportation within one quarter mile walking distance of stops for two or more public, campus, or private bus lines usable by building occupants. The bicycle storage facilities along with preferred parking spots for fuel-efficient vehicles encourage public health and promote greenhouse gas reduction. We were committed to reducing the amount of material used and created during the renovation, 81 percent of its original structural elements were reused. Of the 19 percent of material required for renovation a remarkable 45 percent was recycled content. A Construction and Demolition Waste Management plan was successful at diverting 81 percent of the on-site generated construction waste from landfill. AARL achieved exemplary performance for recycled content and was awarded an Innovation in Design credit.

Credits were achieved for community connectivity, water efficiency, optimizing energy performance and construction and demolition waste prevention, with a grand total of 60 credits thereby achieving Gold certification under version 3 of the LEED rating system.

Awards: 2017 LEED Gold Certified, 2017 Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence, and The CMAA-SAC. 2017 Atlanta Urban Design Commission Award of Excellence. 2M also won the prestigious 2016 Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce M3 Award for the Built Environment category. The Library program was funded by the $275 million bond referendum approved by Fulton County voters in 2008.
