LEED BD+C: New Construction v3 - LEED 2009

Bentley University Arena

Bentley University
Waltham, MA 02452
United States

LEED Platinum 2018

Bentley University's new, state-of-the-art multipurpose arena hosts the university’s NCAA Division I hockey team and prominent university events such as career fairs, high-profile speakers, alumni events and concerts. The 76,000 square foot facility, designed by Architectural Resources Cambridge and built by Suffolk Construction, marks Bentley’s continued rise as a modern, nationally-recognized business university and is a prime example of sustainable design and energy efficiency.

The building enhances student life for the next generation, giving students a place to gather, cheer and learn. Students can use the arena as a “living lab” where they are able to analyze the building’s energy data, complete marketing projects, create sales plans for season tickets, and do other academic projects.

The LEED Platinum certified Bentley Arena is the first LEED certified building on Bentley's campus. Sustainable features include 1,400 solar panels on the roof which provide the building with 40 percent of its annual electricity needs; a state-of-the-art heat reclamation loop which captures waste heat from the ice-making equipment and uses it to preheat domestic hot water and space heating systems; high efficiency LED lighting; and the most efficient water-saving bathroom fixtures on the market which help the building to use approximately 48 percent less water than buildings of similar size and capacity.

Other sustainable features include:
An outdoor plaza built with permeable pavers to reduce stormwater runoff and encourage infiltration into the adjacent wetlands.
Preferred parking spots for electric and fuel-efficient/low-emission vehicles.
Far more window glazing than is typically seen in arenas, a ton of natural light into the building and view to the outside.
Public transportation access via the Bentley shuttle bus and MBTA buses.
Locally-sourced construction materials and Forest Steward Council certified wood.
