LEED Platinum 2017

The physical center of the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB is Bren Hall, a material reflection of the school¹s commitment to meeting human needs in an environmentally sustainable way. This 4-story, 82,972 sq. ft. laboratory mixed-use building is a hub for students, faculty, and researchers to collaborate and tackle some of our most pressing environmental challenges. Upon its completion in 2002, the technologically advanced structure set a new standard for environmentally friendly construction and design for laboratory buildings. The most recent update is the new Edison International Visitors Center.

By earning a LEED Platinum rating and recognition as a model laboratory building in the United States, Bren Hall inspired green-minded architects and builders around the country and proved that a superbly equipped building can be a benchmark of environmental sustainability. In August 2009, Bren Hall received LEED Platinum for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (LEED EB O&M), marking the second time the project achieved this distinction; it certified Platinum when first built under the pilot version of LEED for new construction. In 2017, Bren Hall received a third Platinum designation under LEED for existing buildings, cementing its place amongst the small percentage of projects that have achieved multiple certifications across different rating systems.

Bren Hall's facilities and equipment reflect the School's status as a world-class center of teaching and cutting-edge research. The building is laid out to optimize efficiency and access. Shared spaces, such as the instrument room, chemical storage room, and the climate-control rooms are all located in the center of the building, with labs and instructional rooms arranged around the perimeter. It is home to a collection of clean, bright, accessible, fully equipped, carefully maintained, and thoroughly up-to-date teaching labs and research labs, as well as the Micro-Environmental Imaging & Analysis Facility, which houses one of the few publicly accessible environmental scanning electron microscopes in the nation.

The building's rooms and halls represent the state of the art in terms of presentation technology, energy-efficient lighting and climate-control systems, and the use of recycled and sustainable materials. Dedicated student spaces enable students to combine productive work with useful interaction. The Bren Communications Center serves students in developing their crucial communication skills, and the Engineering Unit supports research and experimental endeavors in a variety of ways.
