Chiesi Group

Chiesi is an international, research-focused biopharmaceuticals group that develops and markets innovative therapeutic solutions in respiratory health, rare diseases, and specialty care. The company’s mission is to improve people’s quality of life and act responsibly towards both the community and the environment. By changing its legal status to a Benefit Corporation in Italy, the US, and France, Chiesi’s commitment to create shared value for society as a whole is legally binding and central to company-wide decision-making. Since 2019 Chiesi is a certified B Corp, meaning that its sustainability efforts are measured and assessed by high standards of social and environmental impact. The company aims at becoming net-zero by 2035. With over 85 years of experience, Chiesi is headquartered in Parma (Italy), operates in 30 countries, and counts more than 6,000 employees. The Group’s research and development centre in Parma works alongside 6 other important R&D hubs in France, the US, Canada, China, the UK, and Sweden. Starting from 2019, with the holistic program "Better Building", Chiesi aims at improving the design of its sites, as well as their construction and management, in order to monitor, benchmark and increase their environmental and social performances. The HQ LEED certification is part of this program.

The Offices

Chiesi has chosen to relocate its two historical offices in Shanghai within a LEED-certified building. Additionally, Chiesi applied the ID+C standard for the interior retrofit.

The design of the interiors was guided by two key goals, energy efficiency and CO2 minimization reduction. The CO2 minimization reduction goal was set in accordance with Chiesi’s decarbonization program “We act to Zero” and to the objective of occupants’ well-being aligned with Chiesi’s Best Place to Work program.

The site is in the city centre and is very well connected to the urban public transport network. The energy used is 100% renewable, and is obtained partly from self-production on site and the residual is purchased in accordance with Chiesi's green energy procurement procedure, which gives preference to renewable energy from photovoltaic fields or wind power plants built in the last 5 years in the country of use (Tier 2). The use of the new v.4.1 renewable energy credit path has rewarded this responsible approach.

On the occupants' perspective, environmental comfort best-practice were applied, in particular concerning acoustic performance, thermal comfort, and architectural aspects, using sustainable furniture components and trendy workstation design.
