As a joint effort between the local public school system and a community revitalization initiative, this 129,283 sf Pre-K through 8th grade school incorporates numerous walking paths throughout the campus that extend into to the surrounding neighborhood, promoting traveling by foot or by bike for students, staff and residents. The site’s positioning provides staff with the option of exercising during breaks and after operational hours, along with walking access to multiple public transit bus lines. The storm water management system was integrated with that of the existing neighborhood, eliminating the need for new construction. Re-fillable water bottle stations are also located throughout the facility. Occupant health was also considered through leveraging integrated pest management and green cleaning strategies. Car charging stations were provided for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, as well as preferred parking spaces that prioritize green vehicles. Measured performance outcomes include water use reduction at 42%, optimized energy performance at 24%, construction waste management at 88%, net greenhouse gas emissions at 417, and the EnergyStar score averages at 77. Additionally, 59% of building products were from recycled content, and 22% of building materials were sourced regionally.
