Coolidge Highschool is a DC School located in the Tacoma neighborhood of Washington DC. The project team had several goals for Coolidge Highschool:
(1) - Design for Equitable Community. The design-build project team viewed community and stakeholder engagement as a critical factor in the success for this project. It was a goal for the project team to develop a school that goes beyond "just being a school" within the community by including other critical community resources that would be accessible all everyone within the surrounding community.
(2) - Design for Economy. A considerable effort was made to keep the majority of the expansion of Coolidge Highschool within the building footprint and maintain the school landscaped grounds. The project team focused on recapturing the former heating plant courtyard and other spaces within the project grounds to minimize impact to the surrounding site and maintaining the historic structure of the building.
(3) - Design for Energy. Adapting an existing historic building rather than just constructing a new school, the team had a goal of designing for energy efficiency in mind. Energy efficient mechanical systems, on-site PV, efficient windows, insulation, and LED lighting were all factors.
