Dominion Energy West Virginia

Last certified on:
Certification level: Silver

Project info

Size9,500 sq ft
The Dominion Energy West Virginia, Summersville City Plant is the first warehouse in West Virginia to certify under LEED v4. The team decided early on to pursue the newest Version of LEED v4 (BD+C: WDC) to set the bar high in terms of sustainability goals. The warehouse is located just off of Interstate 19, in Glade Creek business park. While it may look like your typical metal building from afar, there are numerous components and systems that contribute to this building being 28 percent more energy efficient than a standard building of this size/style/type. To take the energy reduction even further, Dominion agreed to purchase 100 percent of green power RECs of annual building electricity usage over a two-year contract. The building will serve as a distribution center for its field workers as well as a couple of full-time office workers. On the interior, we focused on creating a safe and healthy environment utilizing materials, glues, sealants, paints, etc. with little to no volatile off-gassing, high-level acoustic performance, high efficient air filters, and daylighting for all regularly occupied spaces. We also aimed for a 43 percent reduction of all water fixtures throughout the building. On the exterior, metal wall and roof panels are heavily insulated to maximize the buildings heating and cooling efficiency. White roofing material and light concrete reduce the solar heat gain or "heat island effect," this lessens the radiant heat surrounding the building. We used permeable concrete at the perimeters of the driving surface to reduce the burden of the storm system. The contractors played their part as well, reducing dust during construction, actively maintaining a clean work site, and generating less than 2.5lbs of construction waste per square foot.
