Gladding Residence Center is the first project at Virginia Commonwealth University to come out of the submitting team’s housing master plan. The new development, delivered through a public-private partnership with American Campus Communities, replaces an outdated residence hall with a 12-story, 1,518-bed complex on a prominent site fronting historic Monroe Park. Double-height floor lounges and communicating stairs create active and visible hubs for student interaction, and accommodate kitchens, laundry facilities, and group study and collaboration spaces. The building footprint is a compact “U” shape common to the urban residential typology. A portion of the central wing is recessed along West Main Street to respect a historic bathhouse on the site. The project achieved LEED Silver certification.
