Firehouse 19 is a new 11,000 square foot firehouse located in the Short Pump area of Henrico County. This firehouse is home to Engine 19, Fire Medic 19, Truck 19 and the Robotics Response Team. The fire station houses full-time staff, with 12 individual dorm rooms and three drive-through apparatus bays. The project achieved LEED Gold certification in 2019, with sustainability strategies including energy and water efficiency and the quality of the interior environment for the firefighters. Due to the nature of firefighters’ work, there was a strong focus on indoor air quality. In addition to optimizing response times and firefighter health and safety, the design also took into consideration sleep deprivation and accommodation of a diverse workforce. Twelve individual gender-neutral sleep rooms with individual lighting and thermal control help ensure comfort, privacy, and better sleep patterns for the occupants. Actual energy utility data shows Firehouse 19 is exceeding performance expectations. The design energy use intensity (EUI) projected by the LEED whole building energy model was approximately 55 kBTU (thousand British thermal units) per square foot per year. The actual EUI for Firehouse 19 for calendar year 2019 was 52 kBTU/SF/Year. This is the lowest EUI of all 22 of Henrico County’s fire stations.
