LEED BD+C: New Construction v3 - LEED 2009

Henrico County Varina Area Library

1875 New Market Road
Henrico, VA 23231
United States

LEED Silver 2017

The new Varina Area Library, located at 1875 New Market Road, opened in 2016 as a replacement for the former Varina Branch Library, built in 1970. The new library vastly expands on the services available to county residents, with two floors of diverse collections, various sized meeting areas, a teaching kitchen, reading rooms, and outdoor plaza and patio spaces. The project achieved LEED Silver certification in April 2017, becoming the 14th LEED-certified project owner by Henrico County.

The site was developed in such a way to maintain the rural and agricultural character of the area and minimize impact on natural features and ecosystems. Over 80 percent of the site was preserved as green open space, and either protected from development or landscaped with native plants for a natural meadow-like setting. Building and site lighting was designed to minimize light pollution that might affect nearby properties and the night sky.

The library is located along the Virginia Capital Bicycle trail that connects Richmond to Jamestown and Williamsburg. Ample bicycle storage is provided on site to offer visitors and staff an option for alternative transportation. Preferred parking is provided for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles such as compacts and hybrids, and for those who carpool to the library.

Low-flow plumbing fixtures reduce potable water use by nearly 40 percent, anticipated to save 200,000 gallons of water per year. Energy-efficient building systems such as the building envelope, HVAC, and lights were designed to reduce energy use by 35 percent compared to a building that just meets the building energy code. A variety of building materials include structural steel and metal panels with high recycled content, regionally quarried sandstone on the building exterior, and bio-based wood paneling and linoleum flooring. The library interior provides abundant daylight and views to the outside, and low-chemical emitting building material selections to improve indoor air quality.

The new Varina Area Library was recognized in 2017 by the American Institute of Architects and the American Library Association for excellence in library design. The new library offers Varina area residents many new and improved services in a beautiful setting, while reinforcing Henrico County’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
