Indian Land High school was designed to serve one of the fastest growing regions in the Charlotte Metro area. The new 2,000-student school features an auditorium, career and technology spaces, band, chorus, and drama spaces, a wide variety of athletic amenities, a greenhouse, and a fully landscaped courtyard. An important feature for the design committee was environmental sustainability. This was achieved by earning LEED Silver certification through the USGBC’s LEED for Schools program.
Energy saving features include high efficiency condensing boilers and high efficiency air cooled chillers, variable speed heating hot water and chilled water pumping systems, variable air volume air handlers with night and weekend setback, airside economizers for air handlers, temperature reset for air and water systems, LED lighting, occupancy sensors, and daylighting controls. The school is designed to reduce energy costs by 39 percent and reduce potable water by 30 percent. The building was commissioned to confirm that energy and water saving features were functioning properly when the building opened. Additional sustainable design strategies include the prioritization of responsibly sourced products, use of low emitting materials, and diversion of over 65 percent of the project’s construction waste from the local landfill. Permanent entryway systems, MERV 13 filters, attention to lighting control, and reduction of background noise by HVAC equipment will further improve indoor environmental quality for occupant health.
The new Indian Land High School engages the local population outside of school hours by providing the auditorium, gymnasium, and playing fields for community use.
