This is a 23,257-square-foot (gross area), two-story data center new construction – located on the previously developed site. The site used to be a parking lot and a football court. The new building houses an office space and the data hall.

The building is a new facility that will expand the renting webspace of KIO Networks. With rigorous third party ISO 20000 and 27001 guidelines followed by KIO Networks for services, the data center provides a controlled environment to work, and to comply with the company’s sanitary and cleanliness standards.

Implementing KIO Networks’s Global mission of environmental and corporate social responsibility, KIO Networks promotes a healthy working environment for its workers and customers, and also provides respect towards the environment upon which it is built.

While this is the first Kionetwork’s LEED project in Spain, it is not the first investment in sustainability strategies, technologies and practices.

Key Sustainability Considerations

During schematic design the project team — consisting of owner, architect, green building consultant, mechanical engineer, and electric engineer — set out with key concepts of sustainability that were incorporated early in the design of the project.

  1. Location: The project location was selected to improve accessibility by public transportation. As a result, the site is located next to a public bus stop and a light rail station.
  2. Water Efficiency: The wastewater treatment plant uses treated water for irrigation. This measure, and the water saving fixtures selected for this project, provide huge global water savings.
  3. Energy: The project used the energy modeling tool to study materials, the ROI, and the design of the building in order to implement new measures that lead the building to save energy along the time.
  4. PV panels: 6 arrays of PV panels provide electricity for interior lighting.

Through integrating programmatic elements with environmental design best practices, Kionetwork’s Data Center in Murcia has accomplished the company’s vision to provide an inspiring, healthy and beautiful community benefit to the workers and customers, while addressing the company’s quality challenges, serving as a global model for sustainable design and construction practices through its LEED commitment.
