The design team set out to create a resilient, clean, modern, and efficient entry point into the state. Building on the success of the Kona Airport Modernization Program, the buildings feature modern passenger amenities while honoring the Hawaiian landscape and culture. The project welcomes international passengers by streamlining inspections & connections between airplane, bus, car & bike. The site was previously developed, minimizing habitat loss. Exterior lighting was carefully chosen to minimize light pollution or harm seabirds. A selection of native plants & drip irrigation reduced water by 56%. Low flow faucets & fixtures reduced indoor water 33%. Longevity, ease of maintenance & efficiency guided materials & equipment selection. An astounding 92% of waste diverted through recycling and re-use of concrete, pavement, metals, & wood. Iterative energy modeling prioritized deep eave overhangs to block solar heat gain. This approach allowed floor to ceiling windows to bring in natural daylight & excellent views of the airfield. High efficiency air conditioning coupled with building controls were chosen to support occupant comfort, strict owner requirements & laboratory ventilation. As a benefit, this minimized noise & pollution from jet engines. The roof design added additional structural integrity to accommodate expansion or solar PV installation.
