Certification level: Silver

Project info

Size218,536 sq ft

The new Logan Elm PK-12 is truly a smarter place for learning. The 215,321 SF building brings all Logan Elm students under one roof for the first time. The educational visioning process engaged stakeholders from six schools to create a new vision for a single district building. A two-story academic wing creates separate learning communities for elementary school, middle school and high school students. Highlight of the design includes an Agribusiness Career Tech lab in the high school portion of the building and an elementary school cafeteria that is a hybrid dining/auditorium venue. To meet the challenges of the client's limited budget, the design includes cost-effective precast exterior walls for the gymnasiums and cafeterias.

Sustainable design features include excellent siting and landscape design of the school with a site area of 25 acres with over 69 percent open area including access to a land lab for outdoor classroom space and learning activities. Located in the SW corner of the site, several decarbonization strategies were introduced into the design starting with the energy saving aspects in HVAC & lighting design. For the first time in a school with funding from Ohio Facilities Construction Commission used the Life Cycle Assessment using the Athena Impact Estimator secured three points for the credit and an additional point in the regional priority for the zip code. Enhanced Commissioning was performed by the commission agent to ensure a tight building envelope with thermal imaging and water penetration testing. Decarbonization was included in the specifications to specify materials with low carbon content, the project achieved EPD option 1 & option 2 and exemplary performance for EPD’s and HPD’s. One of the Innovation credits awarded was “Safety First: Design for Indoor Air Quality and Infection Control” and the other was a Pilot Credit reducing Cadmium, Copper & Lead in the project.
