L’Oréal’s plant in Russia is one of the first factory in the world certified at LEED v4 Platinum. The company sets the standard for sustainable production in the cosmetics industry. LEED Platinum is the highest level of certification for the most stringent environmental and energy efficient building standards in the world. The goal has been achieved due to an innovative approach to the design and construction of the factory. In the beginning, a digital model of the L’Oréal factory was developed, which allowed optimizing energy consumption and comfort at the factory. With the help of the model, the following were determined: optimal designs of walls, roofs and windows. Were selected systems: ventilation, heating and air conditioning. Installed lighting with LED lamps, sensors of natural light and presence. Light works only when there is not enough natural light and there are people in the workshop. After the optimization of the plant’s energy consumption was completed, a solar power plant was installed at the factory. Solar panels aimed at the sun, produce up to 10% of the energy consumed by the factory. The rest of the energy is bought from renewable sources. Thus, energy consumption has been reduced by 46%, and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced from 1,300 to 600 tons per year. To save water, the plant has installed water-saving plumbing and advanced sewage treatment plants. The process water is reused. The internal microclimate is ensured by the supply of purified fresh air, temperature control and plenty of natural light. Air quality sensors monitor the freshness of the air at the factory. For the first time in Russia, during the construction of the plant, a life cycle assessment was made when selecting building materials. This method considers energy use at all stages of material creation: extraction, production, transportation, operation and processing. On the territory of the factory there is a playground and recreation areas for employees. Environmental lifestyle events are being held and the use of ecological transport is encouraged. The L’Oréal plant in the Kaluga region is a worthy example of innovation in construction and manufacturing. In 2017, L’Oréal was awarded the Moscow Government in the nomination “Leader of Climate Development in Russia."
