LEED Platinum 2016

MAKRO is part of a company called SHV, founded in 1896. It is a company dedicated to the food industry, having more than 1000 stores in nine different countries around the world.

In Colombia, the SHV group associated with the business group of Antioquia GEA (Grupo Empresarial Antioqueño) entered the Colombian market, by which they leverage the experience of a wholesale and the knowledge of the Colombian market. In 2009, GEA sold its entire equity participation to the SHV Company.

As part of the world’s social and environmental concerns, MAKRO decided to go for the highest certification, trying to improve the way buildings are constructed, and searching for generating less harm to the environment. The result was the second LEED Platinum certified project in all of Latin America,

These are some of the strategies and efforts implemented in the project:

Lighting: The project team achieved significant (more than 50 percent) reductions in lighting power density Compared to the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 allowance. Due to an efficient design with LED luminaries.

Photovoltaic Panels: In order to generate clean energy reducing harm emissions to the environment, the MAKRO project installed photovoltaic panels in more than the 40 percent of the roof. This system supplies more than 13 percent of the project´s energy.

Location: MAKRO, search for a strategic location in order to generate an easy access to the project, settling near one of the most important roads of Medellin.

Energy efficiency: Due to the designed lighting system and an efficient air-conditioning system, the project achieved great savings in energy.

Water efficiency: Rainwater harvesting system and specification of efficient fixtures, allow for saving significant amounts of potable water and protecting the aquifers.
