Megamaxi 6 de Diciembre obtained LEED GOLD certification for commercial interiors, incorporating strategies for relationship with the environment, design and efficient systems that allow achieving the greatest energy efficiency, lower water consumption, less impact on the environment and better comfort conditions for its users.

Megamaxi 6 de Diciembre is an interior renovation project, in a dense area of the city of Quito with easy access to quality transit and services within walking distance.  The project implemented new efficient systems and environmental care strategies to generate an innovative space that contributes to the environment, its immediate surroundings and its community.

Megamaxi 6 de Diciembre incorporates water consumption reduction strategies. All sanitary pieces installed in the project are highly efficient pieces, to reduce water consumption by 40% compared to a conventional supermarket.

Megamaxi 6 de Diciembre achieves a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to a similar supermarket thanks to all the efficient strategies and systems that were part of the project.  Through the use of thermally insulated Kalwall skylights and Solatube solar refraction and lighting tubes, the project is able to make maximum use of natural lighting. Advanced high-performance LED lighting systems, combined with natural light measurement controls, dim the lights inside the store to reduce consumption, maintaining optimal conditions at all times.

The project incorporates a solar panel system that allows clean energy to be produced on site, to supply 10% of the supermarket's energy demand, and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing that demand with renewable energy.

The project incorporates Transcritical Co2 refrigeration systems, using Co2 as refrigerant, reducing the system´s environmental fooprint and energy consumption.  Furthermore the air conditioning and mechanical ventilation systems are the most efficient systems available, with refrigerant use control and indoor air injection verification to maintain the best thermal conditions inside the store, achieving energy efficiency.

Megamaxi 6 de Diciembre was designed to achieve the best conditions of thermal and visual comfort for users, guaranteeing comfortable temperatures and adequate air renewal to keep the building and its occupants healthy.

The mechanical ventilation and air conditioning of the project allowed for a complete cleaning and renewal of the air in the premises prior to its occupation, to eliminate contaminants and operate every day to maintain ideal conditions inside the premises.
