NC State’s 185,000 square foot Plant Sciences Building is a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary scientific center for academic, corporate, and government partners. It is the home of the North Carolina Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI), a significant state research program launched in 2014. The building houses three core research facilities: the Molecular Education Technology and Research Innovation Center (METRIC), the Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility (CMIF), and the Genomic Sciences Laboratory (GSL), all equipped with innovative instruments for pioneering research.
A significant portion of the building, around 102,000 gross square feet, is thoughtfully allocated to laboratories and greenhouse spaces, including open lab suites, specialty and core labs, lab support rooms, a rooftop greenhouse, and a Partner's Lab for corporate collaboration. The design emphasizes a team-based culture, fostering innovation and community engagement.
Agricultural science discovery takes center stage within the building, showcased to faculty, students, collaborators, and visitors. A feature wall narrates the story of agricultural research stations across North Carolina, complemented by agricultural-themed graphics that highlight points of collaboration. A transparent public Demonstration Lab and exterior test plots near the entrance provide a glimpse into ongoing projects.
The building's design process focused strongly on ensuring flexibility for rotating research projects and teams. Extensive benchmarking efforts were undertaken to optimize space utilization and budget allocation.
Sustainability was a top priority throughout the building's construction, with an impressive 87% of construction waste diverted from landfills through waste reduction and recycling measures. The building also incorporates recycled and regionally harvested materials, and indoor air quality using walk-off mats and low VOC finishes.
As a testament to its outstanding energy efficiency, water conservation, and overall sustainability, the Plant Sciences Building achieved LEED Gold certification. This recognition aligns with the design team and the University's commitment to a more sustainable world, successfully integrating laboratory innovation with sustainable goals.
