LEED Silver 2016

In alignment with New Belgium’s commitment to sustainability, its Distribution Center in Asheville has achieved a LEED Silver Certification. From motion-sensor LED lighting to locally sourced and recycled building materials, the 132,000-square-foot warehouse uses nearly 27 percent less energy than a traditional building and is built with the health of both employees and the environment in mind. In the building process, over 31 percent of materials were manufactured within 500 miles, while 82 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills.

The LED lighting uses 20 percent less energy than conventional lighting system and is complemented by skylights, which provide natural daylighting throughout the storage space while protecting beer from direct sunlight and a solar reflectant roof avoids a heat island effect.

The comprehensive landscape design naturally captures stormwater from impervious surfaces to avoid waterway pollution and erosion, and the building’s restrooms and kitchen are 46 percent more water efficient than a typical code-compliant baseline building. More than half of the site is covered in native vegetation and landscaping, providing species habitat and a connection to the outdoors. In addition to a full benefit package, the employee owned Certified B Corp provides a bicycle to all coworkers at one year of employment, annual wellness reimbursement, a free annual bus pass, covered bike parking and showers, as well as primary parking for hybrid and electric vehicles.

About 40 people will work at the facility at full capacity. The warehouse includes 88,000 square feet of refrigerated space, enough to hold 12 million bottles and cans, 50,000 full kegs of beer and 9,000 square feet of outside covered storage area, enough to hold 45,000 empty kegs. There’s 44,000 square feet of storage for 300 tons of cardboard and raw materials.

The distribution center serves the eastern United States and supports the company’s national expansion. New Belgium Brewing, makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale and a host of Belgian-inspired beers, is recognized as one of Outside Magazine’s Best Places to Work and one of the Wall Street Journal’s Best Small Businesses. The 100 percent employee-owned brewery is a Platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Business as designated by the League of American Bicyclists, and one of World Blu’s most democratic U.S. businesses, and a Certified B Corp.
