As an expansion of existing rehabilitation services, this 60-bed addition to Saint Luke’s South brings unprecedented robotic technology and rehabilitation care to Kansas City. The 100,000 SF facility fully integrates the latest therapy equipment, including a 100-foot-long overhead dynamic walking track and state-of-the-art robotic devices. Specialized treatment areas provide functional therapies that simulate everyday activities, creating that “home” environment to help patients transition back to their daily life.

Credits that improved the occupant experience were highlighted in the project design. A top priority was incorporating views, daylight, and access to nature. Large windows were added in all patient rooms and public spaces to offer expansive views of flora, fauna, and sky. The therapy gyms, cafe, and other public spaces were placed on the east/southeast side of the building, which allow patients and staff to enjoy the morning and early afternoon sun while working together. To reduce irrigation demand, traditional turf was replaced with native, warm season grasses and other drought tolerant plants, and a therapy garden and cafe patio provide respite and connections to nature for all visitors.

Other LEED aspects include selecting low-emitting materials that minimized impact to air quality and the environment, maintaining an indoor air quality management plan during construction, providing on-site bicycle facilities and priority parking for green vehicles, and optimizing energy performance.
