A 2016 feasibility study for improvements to the University’s football stadium clarified that expanded fan amenities, greater capacity, and a high-performance sustainable facility were top goals for Old Dominion University. As a high-performance facility, the reduction of energy and water use was a priority for ODU, as was the health and wellness of student-athletes and spectators.
The project scope included the demolition of the east and west stands, allowing for the construction of new stands with added leg room, increased proximity to the field, and better sightlines. A state-of-the-art press box and broadcast booth now contributes to the fan experience both in person at the stadium and those taking in the action remotely via a televised experience. Premium suites were added to the stadium, as well as a multi-purpose event space for use on game days and beyond. Social interaction for students and community fans was addressed through the design of a 20,000 square foot open-deck social gathering space. To tie the experience together, a new arched entrance gate and pre-game plaza provide a space for socialization. This space lays the groundwork to grow the identity of the program and to honor past Old Dominion University athletes.
The 67.5-million-dollar, 30,000 seat stadium features plumbing fixtures that reduce water consumption by 30% annually, and drought tolerant landscaping prevents the need for a permanent irrigation system. Interior and exterior LED lighting and highly efficient mechanical systems yield an energy savings of 373,720 kBtu/yr. Other notable achievements include the diversion of 9,891 tons of construction waste from local landfills to be recycled instead, and the use of building materials with published transparency disclosures. Preference was given to recycled content material, products with reduced global warming potential, and those free of Living Building Challenge Red List ingredients.
