LEED O+M: Existing Buildings v4 - LEED v4

Shell Technology Center Amsterdam

Grasweg 31
Amsterdam, 1031 HW

LEED Silver 2017

The Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA) was established in 1914 and is one of the three major Shell technology centres worldwide. At STCA, over 1,000 professionals are employed, of whom more than 25% are women. More than 30% of the employees has a foreign nationality. STCA currently employs over 50 different nationalities.

The building was completed in 2009 and houses laboratories, test halls, workshops and offices. Over 900 small and large experimental installations are being operated. Most of the test equipment is designed and built in-house. For this purpose, STCA has every possible metalworking technique, including various 3D printers that can produce both metal and plastic components. STCA is ISO 14001 certified, which was very helpful for LEED certification. The thresholds of waste separation, green purchasing, water and energy reduction appeared to be very helpful for staff and service providers to translate the green performance targets into more tangible performance indicators.

Shell has very high values around safety, employee health, people development, equity and environmental care. LEED certification is used to highlight the organizational efforts of Shell Real Estate to meet these values in an exceptional way and to raise the bar towards more sustainable business.

Energy management systems are now more based on continuous performance improvement, extended quality control of equipment & systems and clearly addressed responsibilities are examples of improvements realized during the certification process. More transparency, more integrated operations and improved compliance of service providers are some examples of results achieved. Energy efficiency improvement is part of the ISO 14001 environmental management system and is realized on an ongoing basis.
