UC Davis Recreation Pool Renovation

Last certified on:
Certification level: Gold

Project info

Size5,238 sq ft

The UC Davis Rec Pool renovation began construction in Spring 2018 and completed construction in June 2019. The project did away with the previous pool facility footprint and introduced two new pools and several new amenities, replacing the original built in 1966.

The Rec Pool renovation provides a contemporary new feel for a popular spot among the UC Davis community. The renovation introduced a brand new recreation pool as well as a competition pool, in order to minimize conflict for space among programs. Other new poolside accessories include basketball hoops, in-water and sand volleyball pits, and diving blocks. Improvements of the facility are seen in the renovated 3300 sq. ft. bath house and 1300 sq. ft. filter building. The previous locker rooms have been overhauled and now provide more privacy and heating, as well as durability under wet conditions. Gender-inclusive restrooms were added, and the project replaced much of the concrete deck with grass, palm trees, and landscaping. A sun shade canopy provides shade along the exterior entrance passageway of the bathhouse, outdoor lockers, and outdoor showers, while the lifeguard office now has an expansive view of the complex.

The project earned LEED Gold certification for New Construction on July 1, 2020. The renovation achieved many notable milestones in sustainability, including 28% energy cost savings and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

This project achieved energy savings through the use of solar thermal system to reduce fossil fuel use for pool heating and in building systems and pool equipment. The renovation also improved water efficiency by utilizing low flow plumbing fixtures to contribute to a reduction in water use of more than 35%. In addition, the Rec Pool renovation offset 7% of total energy costs through renewable energy generated on-site. The landscaping also contributes to the reduction in water consumption through efficient irrigation systems and sustainable plant species.

The UC Davis custodial services adhere to LEED’s High Performance Green Cleaning Program and Green Cleaning Policy by utilizing sustainable cleaning products and practices.

The Rec Pool Renovation provides bicycle storage and shower facilities to serve 38% of occupants and peak capacity. The location saw no increase in stormwater runoff.

The Rec Pool Renovation is a prime example of UC Davis’ dedication to improvements in sustainability and efficiency within the community. Sustainable and accessible operations are constantly being implemented and improved in order to promote the health and wellness of the Davis community.
